Christian perspective and European values

This article examines the relationship between the Christian vision of unity in diversity and the founding values of European integration. Jean-Claude Polet, professor of comparative literature at the Université catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve, offers a reflection of a theological and cultural nature drawing on the Gospels, questioning the political and social implications of Christ's message on welcoming the other. The central idea is that the evangelical model of unity respectful of differences can serve as an authentic leaven for thinking about European pluralism, particularly in relation to questions of migration. The contribution of the article lies in its attempt to draw from scriptural sources principles capable of shedding light on the contemporary debate on European identity, while resisting the political instrumentalisation of Christian references in the public sphere.
