Witnessing to Christ in contemporary societies

This article is the testimony of Father Spyridon Tsimouris, a priest of the Diocese of Piraeus in Greece, on the missionary commitment of his parish community toward migrant populations. Through an account rooted in a concrete pastoral reality, the author describes the human, social and spiritual challenges posed by the welcoming of migrants in a region particularly exposed to this phenomenon. The central idea is that authentic Christian witness manifests itself in the encounter with the other, especially the most vulnerable, and that this encounter constitutes a living form of proclaiming the Gospel. On a theological level, the article illustrates how the Orthodox tradition can nourish a contemporary missionary practice, rooted in diakonia and presence in the world, while questioning the vocation of the local Church in the face of the transformations of contemporary societies.
