How does the Church accompany grief?

This article examines the way in which the Orthodox Church accompanies the faithful in the experience of grief, taking as its central object the liturgical office of the funeral. Elie Korotkoff conducts a structured and methodical analysis of this office, identifying the different layers of meaning it contains. The approach is that of a liturgical study attentive to texts, rites and their theological articulation. The main idea is that the funeral liturgy cannot be reduced to circumstantial pastoral accompaniment, but that it carries a coherent and elaborate vision of the human person, of death and of Christian hope.
