Spiritual paternity among the Desert Fathers

This article by Joseph Naumowicz examines the notion of spiritual fatherhood as it manifests among the Desert Fathers of Egypt, Palestine and Syria in the fourth to seventh centuries, drawing on the apophthegmata and the Vitae Patrum. The study adopts a historical and analytical approach, distinguishing spiritual fatherhood from spiritual direction, two terms often conflated in contemporary ascetic literature. The central idea is that the abba is not a director in the modern sense of the term, but a father in the fullest sense: one who begets others in virtue and in the knowledge of God, through the sharing of life, example, word and love.
