Solitude, silence and serenity The subtle variations of the soulThis article by John Chryssavgis examines the monastic virtues of solitude, silence, and serenity as taught by the Elders of Gaza, Barsanuphius the Great and John the Prophet, major figures of Palestinian ascetic spirituality of the fifth and sixth centuries. Drawing on an analytical study of the spiritual correspondence of the two Old Men, the article shows how these three virtues constitute a progressive inner path toward self-knowledge and union with God. The central idea is that solitude, silence, and serenity are not forms of withdrawal into oneself, but the conditions for a genuine openness to the other and to God. On the theological level, the article highlights the coherence and originality of the hesychast tradition of Gaza, heir to Egyptian monasticism and Evagrius Ponticus, while underscoring its anthropological and spiritual significance for the contemporary reader.
