The Holy Spirit also comes to help our weakness

This article reproduces a homily delivered by Father Michel Evdokimov on January 22, 1998, during an ecumenical evening in Châtenay-Malabry, as part of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Drawing on Romans 8:26, the text develops a pneumatological meditation centered on two poles: the person of the Holy Spirit as active intercessor, and human weakness as an existential and ecclesial condition. The author affirms that the Spirit is not an abstract force but the third person of the Trinity, the driving force of all authentic prayer. From an ecumenical standpoint, weakness also refers to the historical divisions between Churches, calling for penitence and humility. The theological contribution lies in the articulation, inspired by Orthodox thought, between the kenosis of Christ, the action of the Spirit, and the vocation of Christians to a paradoxical power grounded in love and reconciliation.
