Father Alexander Men and the Bible
Issue 177 · 1997

This article examines the relationship of Father Alexander Men (1935-1990), a Russian Orthodox priest murdered in 1990, with the biblical Scriptures. Through a documented study of his writings — articles published in the *Journal of the Moscow Patriarchate*, his major work *Son of Man*, and his vast history of humanity's religious quest — the author analyzes Men's exegetical and pastoral method. The article shows how Men, combining contemplative prayer with biblical scholarship, was able to open the Scriptures to his Soviet contemporaries in a context of religious repression. His theological contribution is twofold: he insists on the full humanity of Christ against a prevailing Monophysitism, and situates the Judeo-Christian revelation within the universal spiritual history of humanity, while positioning himself within the tradition of Russian Orthodox biblical scholarship, which he contributes to renewing.
