Reflections on bioethics based on professional experience
Issue 175 · 1996

This article offers a reflection by a practicing physician on the main issues in contemporary bioethics, addressing in turn contraception, abortion, and medically assisted reproduction techniques. Adopting both a clinical and theological approach, the author confronts daily professional experience with the ethical demands of the Orthodox Christian tradition. The central idea is that neither moral legalism nor medical rationality alone is sufficient to respond to situations of distress: only an "economy of love," characteristic of Orthodox sensibility, makes it possible to receive each case in its singularity. The theological contribution of the article lies in the articulation between the rejection of abortion, a nuanced position on contraception, and the use of Orthodox thinkers — Evdokimov, Clément, Maximus the Confessor — to ground a conjugal ethics centered on the mystery of love rather than on prohibition.
