Four meditations on theological discourse

This article by Romanian theologian Radu Preda offers four meditations on the nature and conditions of theological discourse in the Romanian post-communist context. Adopting a reflective and essayistic approach, the author examines the forms this discourse can take — didactic, pastoral and missionary — as well as its limits and foundations. The central idea is that authentic theological discourse cannot be reduced to autonomous intellectual production: it is confession, an act of faith and a word stretched toward silence. Preda draws on the patristic tradition, notably Evagrius Ponticus and John Chrysostom, as well as on the work of Father Stăniloae, to show that Orthodox theology escapes the Protestant dichotomy between science and piety. The contribution of the article lies in its reflection on the renewal of Romanian theological discourse after decades of censorship and forced withdrawal.
