A great theologian

This article by Olivier Clément offers a synthetic study of the theological thought of Father Lev Gillet, known as the "Monk of the Eastern Church." Proceeding through thematic and doctrinal analysis, Clément identifies the foundations and major axes of a body of work nourished by prayer, compassion, and a vast spiritual culture. He shows that Father Lev's theology is rooted in the liturgical and sacramental tradition of the undivided Church, combining apophasis and Christocentrism, while integrating contributions from Russian religious philosophy — Soloviev, Bulgakov — and Western mysticism. The article highlights three central themes: life in Christ as a personal and cosmic relationship, a Christian universality open to non-believers and other religions without relativism, and the figure of the suffering God as a theological response to the problem of evil. The contribution of the article is to reveal in Lev Gillet a major theologian of the twentieth century, whose very humility constitutes the mark of the true theologian.
