The “Sacrament of the Brother”
Issue 166 · 1994

This article by Metropolitan Daniel Ciobotea explores the notion of the "sacrament of the brother" in Orthodox theology. The author develops a theologically structured reflection in three parts, articulating Christology, ecclesiology, and diakonia. The central idea is that the presence of Christ in every human being constitutes a sacramental mystery distinct from the seven traditional sacraments, yet inseparable from the Eucharist. Rooted in the Incarnation and divine philanthropy, this "sacrament" calls the Church to recognize Christ in the suffering neighbor, according to the biblical figures of the Last Judgment and the disciples of Emmaus. Drawing on the Fathers — Chrysostom, Basil, Gregory of Nyssa — the article shows that the Eucharistic liturgy necessarily calls for a social diakonia. It underscores the urgency, for Orthodox Churches emerging from totalitarian regimes, of reactivating this sacramental dimension of commitment to the most vulnerable.
