My journey
Issue 159 · 1992

This article presents the conclusion of the Memoirs of Metropolitan Evlogy (1868-1946), head of the Russian Archdiocese in Western Europe from 1922 until his death, translated by Catherine Sollogoub. It is an autobiographical account in which the Metropolitan sets out the ecclesiological convictions that guided his entire ministry. The central idea is that love of the Church, understood as living freedom in Christ, constitutes the guiding thread of all his pastoral action, beyond political positions or ideological affiliations. Evlogy develops an ecclesiology of freedom opposed to juridism and clericalism, illustrated by his support for Father Sergius Bulgakov and Mother Maria. The theological contribution of this text lies in its conception of ecclesial freedom as the foundation of pastoral life and spiritual creativity within Orthodoxy.
