Vladimir Lossky, the testimony of an Orthodox theologian
Issue 106 · 1958

This article offers a theological and biographical account devoted to Vladimir Lossky (1903-1958), a major figure of Russian Orthodox theology in exile in Paris. Written in the form of a critical and personal study, it traces Lossky's thought through his principal works, notably the *Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church*. The author shows that Lossky renewed Orthodox theology by grounding it in the Greek patristic tradition, in opposition to the influences of German idealism on nineteenth-century Russian religious thought. The article highlights Lossky's distinctive contributions: the inseparable unity of theology and mysticism, the centrality of the Trinity, the doctrine of the Holy Spirit as the foundation of personhood and freedom, and the critique of the *Filioque* as the source of Western ecclesiological imbalances. Taken together, the article constitutes an introduction to the ecumenical relevance of Lossky's thought.
