The negative way and the foundations of theology an introduction to the thought of V.N. Lossky
Issue 106 · 1958

This article by Rowan Williams, drawn from his doctoral thesis defended at Oxford in 1975, offers an analytical study of the apophatic theology of Vladimir Lossky, a major figure of the Russian Orthodox emigration in Western Europe. Drawing on Lossky's published works and late manuscripts, Williams examines the central role Lossky assigns to the negative way as the foundation of all Christian dogmatic reflection. Apophasis here is not a simple dialectical correction of positive discourse about God, but an existential disposition engaging the whole person in a conscious and supra-intellectual encounter with the Trinitarian God. The article highlights the internal coherence of the Losskyan system — articulating Trinitarian theology, personalist anthropology, and soteriology — while pointing to its historiographical tensions, particularly in the sometimes schematic treatment of the Alexandrian Fathers and Dionysius the Areopagite.
