Justice and Orthodoxy
Issue 81 · 1973
This article by Archbishop Damaskinos, Metropolitan of Tranoupolis and director of the Orthodox Centre of Chambésy, brings together sermons delivered in 1972 on the notion of justice from an Orthodox perspective. Adopting both an exegetical and theological approach, the author traces the semantic evolution of the term *dikaiosynê* from classical Greek thought to Saint Paul, by way of the Old Testament. The central idea is that justice cannot be reduced to an ethical or social requirement: grounded in the Incarnation and Resurrection of Christ, it is inseparable from divine justification and the deification of man. The article thus offers an original Orthodox perspective on the relationship between social engagement and spiritual life, articulating Christology, soteriology and eschatology around the paschal mystery as the ultimate horizon of all authentic justice.
