A commentary on Solzhenitsyn’s letter to Patriarch Pimen
Issue 80 · 1972

This article offers a theological and ecclesial commentary on the "Lenten Letter" that Alexander Solzhenitsyn addressed in 1972 to Patriarch Pimen of Moscow. Archbishop John of San Francisco adopts a meditative and analytical approach, seeking to restore the deeper intention behind Solzhenitsyn's gesture. The central idea is that this letter does not constitute an attack against the Russian hierarchy, but rather a paradoxical defense of the patriarch: by criticizing him publicly, Solzhenitsyn offers him a platform that Soviet constraints deny him. The article makes a notable ecclesiological contribution by distinguishing two forms of service within the Church — the priestly ministry and the prophetic ministry — and by refusing to set them in opposition. It thus invites the Orthodox diaspora to nuance its judgments on the Church in the Soviet Union, judgments too often formulated from a position of religious freedom foreign to the reality lived on the ground.
