About intercommunion
Issue 55 · 1966

This article presents the position of a Bulgarian archimandrite against any form of intercommunion between Orthodox and heterodox Christians. Written as a polemical response to a previous article published in the journal *Contacts*, the text develops a rigorous dogmatic-moral argument. The central idea is that the admission of non-Orthodox Christians to the Orthodox Eucharist constitutes a sacrilege, insofar as the latter persist in doctrinal errors assimilated to unrepented sins. The author draws on Orthodox sacramental theology and penitential discipline to reject intercommunion as a pastoral or ecumenical means. The contribution of this text lies in its illustration of an intransigent Orthodox ecclesiology, for which eucharistic communion cannot precede unity of faith, but can only be its culmination.
