Holiness according to the Orthodox tradition
Issue 38 · 1962

This article by Gerhard P. Zacharias offers a theological and spiritual study of holiness in the Orthodox tradition. Drawing on the famous conversation between Saint Seraphim of Sarov and Motovilov and on the *Way of a Pilgrim*, the author adopts both a doctrinal and an illustrative approach to identify the distinctive features of the Orthodox conception. The central idea is that holiness consists in the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the whole person — body and soul —, achieved through participation in the holy mysteries of the Church, particularly baptism and the Eucharist. The article examines the notion of deification (*theosis*), distinguishes it from Catholic and Protestant conceptions, and analyzes hesychast prayer as a liturgical extension into daily life. It thus provides a comparative perspective on Orthodox soteriology and mysticism, highlighting their ecclesiological roots and their universal dimension.
