The humble iconographers of the Turkish period
Issue 33 · 1961

This article by Photis Kontoglou, a twentieth-century Greek iconographer, focuses on icon painters who practiced their art in Greece under Ottoman rule, from the sixteenth to the early nineteenth century. Combining personal testimony with historical study, the text describes the social and spiritual milieu of these anonymous craftsmen, who came from isolated villages and were trained within a monastic and ecclesiastical framework. The central idea is that their humility and piety formed the very foundation of their creative work: far from any individual ambition, they expressed a coherent theological vision of the transfigured world. The article makes a valuable historical contribution by cataloguing the names, inscriptions, and works of numerous iconographers — Cretan, Epirote, and Peloponnesian — whose memory was at risk of disappearing, while at the same time affirming the inherent theological value of the Byzantine iconographic tradition.
