The prayer of the heart and the rediscovery in the West of the spiritual tradition of the Eastern Churches
Issue 238 · 2010

This article examines the reception in the West of the Eastern spiritual tradition centred on the prayer of the heart, and more particularly on the Jesus Prayer. Drawing on a historical and synthetic approach, the contribution of Adalbert Mainardi, a monk of the Bose community, traces the broad outlines of this hesychast tradition as it has been transmitted through foundational texts such as the Philokalia and the Way of a Pilgrim. The author shows how these sources have aroused growing interest in Western spiritual circles and nourished an in-depth interecclesial dialogue. The article also presents the main gatherings organised within the framework of the Bose colloquia devoted to this theme. Its contribution lies in the historical contextualisation of this movement of rediscovery and in the light it sheds on the dynamics of transmission between the Christian traditions of East and West.
