The royal priesthood of the faithful according to P. Evdokimov
Issue 235 · 1970

This article by André Lossky (Saint Sergius Institute) examines the theology of the royal priesthood of the faithful as developed by Paul Evdokimov in his work *L'Orthodoxie*. The study, analytical and comparative in nature, focuses on two passages devoted respectively to ordination and chrismation. The author confronts Evdokimov's positions with liturgical and patristic sources — Origen, Basil of Caesarea, Oecumenius, Leo the Great — in order to assess their grounding in tradition. The central idea is that Evdokimov distinguishes the royal priesthood, common to all the baptized, from the ministerial order, without ontological difference between them. The article makes a twofold contribution: it highlights the originality and coherence of Evdokimov's thought on this theme, while pointing out its limitations, notably the almost exclusive recourse to monastic examples to illustrate the concrete exercise of the universal priesthood.
