On the Council of Crete
Issue 255 · 2016

This article examines the Pan-Orthodox Council of Crete (2016) and the circumstances that led four autocephalous Churches to abstain from participating. André Shishkov, a theologian and essayist affiliated with the Patriarchate of Moscow, offers an analysis of the ecclesiological and institutional dynamics at work within contemporary Orthodoxy. The author examines the structural tensions that undermine Orthodox conciliarity and questions whether current pan-Orthodox institutions are adequate to embody genuine synodal unity. The main contribution of the article lies in identifying the ecclesial, political, and identity-based factors that account for the fractures observed during this historic council, thereby providing interpretive keys for understanding the current state of Orthodox governance and the challenges it will need to overcome in order to achieve effective conciliarity on a global scale.
