Obedience or the mystery of reconciliationArchimandrite Zacharias, from the Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Maldon (Essex), offers a theological meditation on the virtue of obedience in the Orthodox spiritual tradition. Drawing on the teaching of Saint Silouan the Athonite and Elder Sophrony Sakharov, the article examines the organic link between obedience, humility and inner freedom. The author develops the thesis that spiritual obedience constitutes the first indispensable step on the path of humility, a necessary condition for any true encounter with God. Far from being mere outward submission, obedience is presented as a mystery of the regeneration of the soul, capable of freeing the heart from the grip of the self. The contribution of this article lies in the precise articulation between these three spiritual realities, illuminated by the Athonite hesychast tradition of the twentieth century.
