Hieromonk Arsène (Alin) Pohrib, holder of a master’s degree in Orthodox theology from the Saint-Serge Institute (Paris), holds a doctorate in biblical studies from the University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and a master’s degree in religious studies from the École pratique des hautes études (Paris). He is currently preparing, for the “Sources chrétiennes” collection, an annotated translation of the treatise *On the State of Souls after Death* by Eustratios of Constantinople.

The treatise “On the State of Souls after Death” by Eustratios of Constantinople witness to a 6th century controversy on the destiny of souls "post mortem"This article focuses on the treatise *On the State of Souls after Death* by Eustratios of Constantinople, a sixth-century Byzantine theologian. Hieromonk Arsenie Pohrib offers an analytical study based on a rigorous examination of this patristic source. The author shows that Eustratios does not claim to resolve the mystery of life post mortem, but methodically gathers its biblical and patristic data, articulating them around the christological mystery: it is the divine humanity of Christ, the First-Born from the dead, that constitutes the theological foundation of all reflection on the fate of souls after death. The contribution of the article lies in the historical and doctrinal contextualization of the treatise, which makes it possible to clarify its theological concepts and to shed light on the Orthodox understanding of the union of the human being with God in an eschatological perspective.
