Monasticism consecration of man to God
Issue 237 · 2012

This article is a theological meditation by Archimandrite Vasileios Gondikakis, former abbot of the Iviron Monastery on Mount Athos, devoted to the nature and vocation of Christian monasticism. The author examines the monastic vocation as a dynamism inscribed in human nature and activated by baptismal grace, addressed not only to the monk himself but to the entire ecclesial body. The central idea is that monastic solitude, far from being a withdrawal into oneself, paradoxically leads to a form of universal communion, expressed as offering and intercession for the world. On the theological level, the article provides a reflection on the articulation between individual vocation and the ecclesial dimension of monasticism, while opening a perspective on the possible dialogue between Christian theology and contemporary sciences.
