This article examines the evolution of contemporary Greek Orthodox theology since the 1960s, focusing on both its advances and its shortcomings. Drawing on a critical and analytical study, it evaluates the theological renewal movement that has marked the Hellenic sphere and, by extension, the whole of Orthodoxy. The central idea is that this renewal, despite its undeniable positive influence, has given rise to several intellectual and methodological drifts. The author identifies in particular a lag in disciplines such as biblical studies and missiology, as well as problematic schematizations: idealization of the Eastern tradition, valorization of a Hellenism that is more cultural than ecclesial, an overly rigid opposition between Eastern and Western Christianity, and an overvaluation of the episcopal institution in eucharistic ecclesiology. The contribution of the article lies in a nuanced and self-critical assessment of contemporary Greek Orthodox theology, useful for understanding its current orientations.
