The place of Saint Symeon the New Theologian in the Catholic patristic renewal in France
Issue 283 · 2023

This article examines the reception of Saint Symeon the New Theologian (949-1022) within the framework of the Catholic patristic renewal that developed in France during the twentieth century. Through a historical and theological study, the author traces the way in which this major figure of Byzantine mysticism was rediscovered and integrated into the works of French Catholic theologians and patrologists. The main idea is that Symeon the New Theologian, long overlooked in the West, occupied a singular place in this ressourcement movement, contributing to a renewed dialogue between Eastern and Western spiritual traditions. The contribution of the article lies in shedding light on the intellectual mediators and historical conditions that made this reception possible, thereby enriching the understanding of theological exchanges between Catholicism and Orthodoxy in the last century.
