The Father, freedom of God A synthetic reading of Jean Zizioulas's thought
Issue 276 · 2021

This article by Dario Chiapetti focuses on the conception of the Father as the foundation of divine freedom in the theological thought of Archbishop Jean Zizioulas, Metropolitan of Pergamon. The study adopts an analytical and systematic approach, articulating the contemporary theologian's reflection with his patristic sources, notably the Cappadocian Fathers. The central idea is that freedom is not an abstract attribute of the divine nature, but a personal and hypostatic reality, of which the Father is the principle and guarantor within the Trinity. The theological contribution of the article lies in highlighting the coherence between Zizioulas's personalist ontology and the patristic tradition, showing how the monarchy of the Father grounds an understanding of God in which freedom and love are identified in the person of the Father as the source of Trinitarian being.
