Dumitru Popescu

This article by Dumitru Popescu, drawn from a paper delivered at an international colloquium on Orthodox dogmatic theology in Arad in 2007, examines the founding role of Christianity in the constitution of European cultural identity. Adopting a theological and argumentative approach, the author criticizes the omission of any Christian reference in the 2004 European Constitution and argues for a transcendence of the dichotomy between nature and the supernatural inherited from modernity. Drawing on biblical and patristic thought, and notably on Saint Maximus the Confessor and Father Stăniloae, the article develops a unitary vision of creation articulated around the concept of the Logos. It demonstrates that the rationality of the universe, recognized by contemporary science, opens the way to a rediscovery of the divine Word as the unifying principle of creation and the foundation of an authentic European ethos.
