Dialoguing with Islam, A stubborn respect
Issue 267 · 2019

This article presents and analyzes the work Un respect têtu, the fruit of a dialogue between the Muslim thinker Mohamed Talbi and the Orthodox theologian Olivier Clément. Emmanuel Pisani sets out its central problematic through a critical study of the theological foundations of Islamic-Christian dialogue. The main idea rests on the possibility of an authentic encounter between Islam and Christianity, founded not on doctrinal relativism, but on a mutual recognition of differences. On the theological level, the article highlights the reading that Clément proposes of the Quran, in which he perceives a "nostalgia for Christ," as well as his call for a renewal of Christian eschatological consciousness. The contribution of this article lies in its input to contemporary Orthodox reflection on the theological and spiritual conditions of a rigorous and respectful interreligious dialogue.
