This article constitutes a personal testimony rendered by Bishop Athenagoras Peckstadt in memory of Metropolitan Emilianos Timiadis (1916-2008), delivered at the international colloquium on spiritual fatherhood at the monastery of Bose in September 2008. Drawing on a direct acquaintance with the late hierarch, the author traces his biography — from his Cappadocian origins to his long tenure as permanent representative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the World Council of Churches (1959-1984) — and illustrates the distinctive features of his pastoral personality. The article highlights Emilianos Timiadis's conception of spiritual fatherhood: a commitment without confessional or institutional boundaries, nourished by the patristic tradition and oriented toward faith lived as a personal choice. It thus sheds concrete light on the figure of the contemporary Orthodox spiritual father, articulating ecumenical engagement, missionary concern and rootedness in the hesychast tradition.

This article is the transcript of a homily delivered in 2005 in Brussels on the occasion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Bishop Athénagoras Peckstadt develops a theological reflection on the central role of the Eucharist in the constitution and unity of the Church. Drawing on the First Epistle to the Corinthians, he analyzes Christian divisions as a fundamental threat to the very nature of the Church.
