Geneviève Médevielle

This article by Geneviève Médevielle, drawn from a paper presented in 2010 at the CECEF conference at the Institut catholique de Paris, addresses the ethical question of migration in a secularized and pluralist Western context. Belonging to the field of applied theological ethics, the study examines why there is no single Christian ethic of migration, but rather a plurality of legitimate positions. The author identifies three sources of this pluralism: the interpretive context that shapes moral judgment, the weight of emotion in encounters with migrants, and the diversity of Christian motivations brought into play. She distinguishes three ethical models — autonomous ethics, ethics of faith, prophetic communitarian ethics — while affirming one non-negotiable point: the unconditional respect for the dignity of every human being, grounded in divine filiation, constitutes the ultimate criterion of any Christian morality of migration.
