Geoffrey Ready

This article by Geoffrey Ready examines the possibility of a Christology formulated in primarily biblical terms, on the occasion of the seventeen-hundredth anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. The study adopts an exegetical and historico-theological approach, situating the Christological question within the continuity of the Jewish tradition and its reading of the Hebrew Scriptures. The central idea is that the understanding of the person of Christ can be enriched by a Semitic and biblical approach, without thereby invalidating the conciliar definitions elaborated within the framework of Greek philosophy. The contribution of the article lies in bringing to light lines of convergence between Christian Christology and certain traditions of Judaism, convergences that the historical tensions between the Church and the Synagogue have progressively obscured. This approach contributes to broadening the Catholic understanding of Christology by integrating its Semitic scriptural dimension.
