The renewal of Orthodox theology – Florensky, Bulgakov and the others: toward a Christian philosophy
Issue 288 · 2024

This article by Georges Florovsky focuses on the twentieth-century Orthodox theological renewal movement, particularly on the works of Pavel Florensky and Sergei Bulgakov, heirs to Russian religious philosophy. It is a critical study in which Florovsky, a central figure of the neo-patristic synthesis, examines the foundations and orientations of this school of thought. The main argument is that this movement, far from constituting a genuine theological renewal, represents an intellectual and spiritual dead end. Florovsky develops this thesis by analyzing the conceptions of divine-humanity specific to these thinkers, by tracing the philosophical origins of their positions, and by identifying their doctrinal limitations. The contribution of the article lies in the articulation between autobiographical reflection and rigorous theological argumentation, shedding light on the internal tensions within the Russian Orthodox renewal.
