The face of the glorified man The deification in the spiritual homilies of Saint Macarius of Egypt
Issue 281 · 2023

This article offers a patristic florilegium devoted to the spiritual anthropology of Macarius the Egyptian, a fourth-century desert father. Through a thematic selection and organization of texts drawn from his corpus, Hildo Bos traces the Macarian conception of the human being, particularly in its eschatological and transfigurative dimension. The central idea is that man, created in the image of God, is called to a progressive glorification through union with Christ, a process that manifests itself even in the body. The contribution of this article is twofold: it sheds light on the doctrinal coherence of Macarius's thought on deification and offers a structured reading tool for a work that is often approached in a fragmentary manner, thus contributing to a better understanding of the Egyptian ascetic and mystical tradition in its relationship to orthodox theological anthropology.
