Symeon the New Theologian and the Byzantine doctrine of the Eucharist
Issue 283 · 2023

This article examines the eucharistic theology of Symeon the New Theologian (949-1022), a major figure in Byzantine spirituality. Through an analytical study of his writings, Istvan Perczel investigates the place that the Eucharist occupies in the thought and spiritual practice of this reforming monk. The main idea is that Symeon's eucharistic doctrine cannot be separated from his mystical theology, particularly his conception of the union of the soul with Christ and the vision of divine light. The article thus contributes to a better understanding of the Byzantine doctrine of the Eucharist by showing how Symeon articulates sacrament and mystical experience, offering an original perspective on the tensions and continuities that run through the theological and liturgical tradition of the Eastern Church in the medieval period.
