Transfiguring Time: Olivier Clément, Theologian
Issue 267 · 2019

This article examines the theological thought of Olivier Clément through his first major work, *Transfigurer le temps*, devoted to the relationship between Christian faith and History. Jeremy Ingpen, the English translator of this work, offers an analytical presentation aimed at identifying the theological method specific to Clément. The central idea is that Clément does not conceive of theology as an abstract speculative exercise, but as a lived experience of spiritual reality, in which historical time is called to be transfigured by the light of Christ. The article thus highlights the coherence of an approach in which history, eschatology, and mystical experience are closely intertwined. On the theological level, it contributes to a better understanding of the epistemological foundations of Clément's Orthodox theology and its singularity within the theological landscape of the twentieth century.
