Living with the loss of a loved one to experience invincible life
Issue 294 · 2026

This article presents the testimony of Lytta Basset, a Swiss Protestant pastor and theologian, on her experience of grief following the suicide of her son Samuel. Belonging to the testimonial genre, the text traces the author's inner journey from the initial collapse to the gradual rebuilding of her life. The central idea is that the loss of a loved one can open the way to a renewed experience of resurrection: through an "improbable event" — the mediation of an unknown student conveying messages from her deceased son — Basset experienced the continuity of the bond of love beyond death. The theological contribution of the article lies in bringing these contemporary experiences of contact with the deceased into dialogue with biblical texts on resurrection, proposing a rereading of Christian dogma through the lived experience of grief, while emphasizing the necessity of spiritual discernment.
