Olivier Clément and the Philokalic Spirit
Issue 267 · 2019

This article examines the introduction to the Philokalia written by Olivier Clément, as analyzed and commented upon by Father Marc-Antoine Costa de Beauregard. The study is part of a theological and literary analysis approach, seeking to identify the specificity of Clément's thought in relation to the philocalic tradition. The central idea is that poetic language constitutes, for Clément, the most adequate mode of expression for approaching and conveying the divine mystery, owing to its capacity to transcend the limits of rational discourse. On the theological and historical level, the article situates Olivier Clément in continuity with the philocalic Fathers, showing how his work belongs to a living patristic tradition while endowing it with a contemporary resonance. This contribution thus sheds light on Clément's place in twentieth-century Orthodox theology.
