A contemporary Protestant perspective on the Nicene Creed
Issue 290 · 2025

This article examines the reception of the Council of Nicaea and its creed within the Protestant tradition. Taking a historical and theological approach, Marc Boss traces the way in which several theologians from the Reformation interpreted and transmitted the Nicene dogma, particularly the formulations of the Trinitarian mystery that derive from it. The central idea concerns the tension between fidelity to the original formulation of the creed and the need for a renewed expression adapted to successive theological contexts. The article thus highlights the continuity and the distinctive inflections of the Protestant reception of a foundational text of Christianity. Its contribution lies in the light it sheds on the way in which a non-conciliar tradition appropriated the doctrinal heritage of Nicaea, contributing to the ecumenical dialogue around a creed common to the Christian Churches.
