A faith that fills life with light, love and beauty
Issue 247 · 2014

This article is devoted to the figure of Olivier Clément (1921-2009), a French Orthodox theologian whose intellectual and spiritual journey is traced from his conversion to his death. It takes the form of a personal testimony written by Father Marko Rupnik, who was close to Clément, and constitutes the translated preface of a work published in Italian in 2010. The central idea is that faith lived as an experience of salvation in Christ — and not as abstract adherence to values — transfigures the entire existence, opening onto a Trinitarian communion that reconciles knowledge, beauty and culture. The theological contribution of the article lies in shedding light on Clément's contribution to Francophone Orthodox theology: his ecumenism founded on the communion of persons, his symbolic and poetic theology inherited from the patristic tradition, and his reflection on Roman primacy constitute significant milestones in interconfessional dialogue in the twentieth century.
