Métropolite de Pergame Jean Zizioulas

This article is the transcription of a paper delivered by Metropolitan John Zizioulas at the 8th Congress of the Orthodox Brotherhood in Western Europe. Drawing on a systematic theological approach, it examines the tension between communion and otherness at three levels: fallen existence, ecclesial existence, and personal existence. The central idea is that the fear of the other, inherited from the fall, confuses difference with division, giving rise to death and isolation. In response to this diagnosis, Zizioulas proposes the Trinitarian model as the foundation for a reconciliation between communion and otherness: in God, otherness is constitutive of unity. This vision finds concrete expression in the Eucharist, in ministries, and in the notion of the person. The major theological contribution lies in the original articulation between Trinitarian ontology, Eucharistic ecclesiology, and personalist anthropology, offering Western Orthodoxy a framework for bearing witness at the heart of contemporary individualist culture.
