Olivier Clément, a life guide, a Protestant perspective
Issue 247 · 2014

This article is the testimony of a Protestant nun, a sister of the Community of Grandchamp, on the influence exerted by Olivier Clément in Reformed circles in French-speaking Switzerland. Written on the occasion of a tribute paid one year after the death of the Orthodox theologian, it traces the ties forged between Clément and the Community of Grandchamp since 1957, as well as his influence on Reformed theology faculties and the Taizé community. The central idea is that of the "transmitter of life": Clément, marked by a long existential quest before his conversion to Orthodoxy, was able to convey a message of hope to Protestant interlocutors who were receptive to his dual cultural belonging. The article highlights the ecumenical fruitfulness of an Orthodox thought capable of engaging in dialogue with the Reformed tradition, thereby contributing to the history of relations between Orthodoxy and Protestantism in Western Europe in the twentieth century.
