Poems excerpted from the Prologue of Ohrid Lives of the saints, hymns, reflections and homilies for each day of the year
Issue 269 · 2020

This article presents a selection of four poems taken from the *Prologue of Ohrid*, a major work by Saint Nicholas Velimirovich (1880-1956), a Serbian bishop canonized in 2003, first published in 1928. These texts are reproduced in their French translation, published by the éditions L'Âge d'Homme as part of a collection devoted to the great Orthodox spiritual figures of the twentieth century. The poems, hymnographic in form, successively develop the themes of divine kenosis, of Redemption figured through a Trinitarian allegory, of thanksgiving according to the gifts received, and of the relationship between truth and freedom. From a theological standpoint, these hymns illustrate the capacity of the Serbian Orthodox tradition to articulate Christological dogma and spiritual experience within an accessible poetic form, heir to both Byzantine liturgy and Slavic popular sensibility.
