Philosophy of history according to Nicolas Berdyaev and Jacques Maritain prophetism or prospective? Some elements of analysis
Issue 238 · 2010

This article examines the convergences and divergences between the philosophy of history developed by the Russian Orthodox thinker Nicolas Berdyaev and that of the Thomist philosopher Jacques Maritain. Based on a comparative and analytical approach, the study explores the way in which these two Christian intellectuals, coming from different traditions, elaborated a reflection on the meaning of history, human freedom and the destiny of civilization. The central idea is that, despite their distinct theological groundings, Berdyaev and Maritain share an eschatological and personalist vision of history that stands in opposition to modern determinisms. On the theological and intellectual level, the article highlights the influence exerted by Berdyaev's thought on twentieth-century Western Christian philosophy, thereby contributing to a better understanding of the dialogue between Orthodox Christianity and Catholicism in the field of the philosophy of history.
