Pierre Burgat

This article by Pierre Burgat examines the conception of the human person in the thought of Father Sophrony Sakharov, in critical dialogue with contemporary Eastern spiritualities. The author adopts a comparative theological and spiritual approach, confronting the Orthodox hesychast tradition with meditative currents that value the dissolution of the self as a path to liberation. The central idea is that all authentic existence rests on an irreducible "hypostatic principle": far from being effaced in union with God, the human person finds therein its full fulfillment. This thesis is grounded in the Orthodox distinction between nature and hypostasis, inherited from the Trinitarian and Christological theology of the Fathers. The contribution of the article lies in the highlighting of an Orthodox personalist anthropology capable of responding to the challenges posed by non-Christian spiritualities that tend to dissolve personal identity into the impersonal.
