Pierre Sollogoub

This article by Pierre Sollogoub examines the question of reforming the Orthodox liturgical calendar, and more particularly the divergence of Easter dates among Christian Churches. Drawing on historical and theological study, it traces the biblical and conciliar foundations of the paschal computus from the Council of Nicaea (325) to contemporary pre-conciliar debates. The central idea is that the Orthodox paschal computus, based on the Julian calendar, has progressively diverged from the decision of Nicaea, which defined the date of Easter independently of any calendar, on the basis of astronomical data. The article demonstrates that current divergences result from a historical misunderstanding rather than a canonical prescription, and that recourse to astronomical data would make it possible to restore a common date. The main contribution lies in the technical and theological clarification of the paschal computus, dissociating the Nicaean decision from its subsequent calendrical applications.
