"Eucharistizing" the universe

This article by Olivier Clément constitutes the conclusion of his study "Maranatha – Notes on the Eucharist in the Orthodox Tradition," published in the collective work *Eucharistia. Encyclopédie de l'Eucharistie* (Cerf, 2002). Considered by its author as a theological testament, this dense meditative text develops a cosmic and anthropological vision of the Eucharist. The central idea is that the world was created to become Eucharist: Christ, by assuming creation, frees it from death and transforms it into an offering to the Father. Man is called to become a "eucharistic man," priest of the world on the altar of his heart, capable of discerning in beings and things the eucharistic potentialities revealed by the "eye of the heart." The theological contribution lies in the articulation between Trinitarian Eucharist, cosmic transfiguration, and ethical engagement, up to martyrdom as the ultimate form of this transformation.
