The Church is one

This article by Father Michel Evdokimov offers an in-depth study of the ecclesiology of Alexis Stepanovitch Khomiakov (1804-1860), a Russian Slavophile theologian whose thought remains little known in the West. Through an analytical reading of his writings, particularly the pamphlet *The Church is One*, the author sets out the Trinitarian foundations of Khomiakov's ecclesiology: the Church, the living body of Christ animated by the Holy Spirit, draws its unity from divine unity itself. The notion of *sobornost* — conciliarity grounded in mutual love and freedom — constitutes the heart of this vision. The article shows how this ecclesiology, critical of Roman juridicism and Protestant subjectivism, influenced the Catholic theological renewal of the twentieth century and the debates of Vatican II. Its contribution lies in bringing Khomiakov's thought to bear on contemporary ecumenical issues, particularly the question of primacy and the *Filioque*.
