This article examines the theology of the cross in Gregory of Nyssa, a fourth-century Church Father, within the post-Nicene context. Through a synthetic theological study, Olga Sevastyanova interrogates the classical tension between theology of glory and theology of the cross, proposing a way of transcending it based on the notion of sacrifice as developed by Gregory of Nyssa. The central idea is that the cross cannot be reduced to an expiatory function: it constitutes simultaneously the ultimate humiliation of Christ assuming human death and the birthplace of eternal divine life communicated to believers. By demonstrating the inseparability of the cross and the resurrection in Gregorian thought, the article offers a significant theological contribution to the Orthodox understanding of patristic soteriology.
